The ESRF (NWT) was established under the 2014 Petroleum Resources Act. Section 68(1) of the legislation states the purpose of the ESRF (NWT) as: to finance environmental and social studies pertaining to the manner in which, and the terms and conditions under which, exploration, development and production activities on petroleum lands authorized under this Act or any other Act should be conducted.
